Who do YOU say He is?

Mark 8:27-29 27 Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them,“Who do people say I am?”

28 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.”

29 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”

Who do YOU say Jesus is?  This is the real question we must ask ourselves. Is He the Messiah, the one who will make YOU right with God? Or is He just an old fairytale that you heard about growing up. It doesn’t matter who your Mom and Dad say He is. It doesn’t matter who I say He is…Jesus wants to know, who do YOU say He is? If you say He is the Son of God, nothing else matters.

Mark 8:34-38 34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. 35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. 36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? 37 Is anything worth more than your soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Will you follow Him? Will you be a Christ follower, and not just a “Christian”? Jesus gave up His life for you, are you willing to give up your life and follow Him? It freaks me out, and keeps me up at night knowing that there are many students in my youth group that call themselves Christians, but do not follow Jesus. That I have friends who don’t have a relationship with Jesus, but have religion, and are missing out! If you are a Christ follower, are you ashamed of it? Do you take the opportunities to share Him with those who don’t know Him? Do you take a stand for beliefs?

Ephesians 2:8-10 8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

It’s a gift, it’s not about earning it or being good enough. It’s not about tithing or attending church, it’s about letting Jesus take the punishment we deserve. It’s about giving Him our lives because of our gratitude for what He did on the cross. The “works” that we do, are because we are so grateful for the gift God gave us. “Works” are not what gets us into heaven. If getting into heaven could be earned, God would not have sent His son to die on the cross. It was a sacrifice for all of our sins, past, present, and future. IF we could earn our way, heaven would not longer be a perfect place because we would all be bragging on how we got there, and it would not longer be a gift. God created everything, therefore He can make the rules. We may not understand everything about God or the bible, but we don’t need to. We need to understand the good news, the gospel.
