News Update

A ten member church team traveled to Haiti to help rescue children from one or more orphanages that had been devastated in the earthquake on January 12. The children were being taken to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic where they could be cared for and have their medical and emotional needs attended to. Our team was falsely arrested today and we are doing everything we can from this end to clear up the misunderstanding that has occurred in Port au Prince

Even the best of intentions can be wrong if you break the law. Taking children out of a country, without going through the proper chain, can land you in trouble. The missionary’s quoted Philippians 1:13 “For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ.” I think they are in jail because the broke the laws of the local government. I think their hearts were in the right place, I am just not sure Christ would have agreed with their methods. What does the Bible say about obeying the laws of governments?

Romans 13:1-3 “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

Some of the children were able to communicate that they were not orphans at all. They had their parents names, phone numbers etc. Which is why the Haitian government is calling them kidnappers.

A growing concern is for people who are trying to adopt Haitian children, is that this may hinder their adoption process.

Final thought, how would we feel if a group of people rounded up children here in the US, to take them to another country?
