Understandable Message: At the depth of our soul, we have a longing to belong. To be accepted by people, and to be loved. We search for acceptance in earthly things, and through people. There is a game we played as kids called “Tag” maybe you have heard of it? OK, in case you have been living in the hills all of your life, let me explain. In the game of tag a large group of people singles out one person to be “it”. They do everything they can to get away from the person who is “it”. They run, they hide, they push others in the way to avoid getting tagged. Now if you are the person who is “it”, you are desperately trying to tag someone else in the group. In tagging them, they become “it”, and you are accepted into the group. Now here is how a children’s game applies to groups. If we are honest, most of us would admit that we have a fear of not belonging. We have a fear of being cast out from our group, and being on our own. In the game of tag, the people in the group will do anything to not become “it”. This includes running away from them, right down to pushing someone else in the way, so they themselves do not get tagged and become “it”.

I see a similarity in our lives, when we shift the focus off ourselves by teasing, labeling, or bullying. We think. “If the focus is on someone else, it won’t be on me. If the focus is on them, people won’t see how messed up I am.” See at our core, we are afraid of being on our own. We want to belong.

In the scriptures we studied today we talked about covenants. How since the fall of Adam and Eve God has been trying to bring us back together with Him. Humanity has been wandering around, looking to belong, looking to fill that God sized hole in our hearts that only He can fill. God makes a covenant with us through His son Jesus Christ. A sense of you belong to Me and I belong to you. He says,”I AM your God, and you are My children.” We just need to enter into the covenant with Him, and we can stop searching, wandering, and trying to fill the hole in our hearts that only can be filled by a relationship with our Father in heaven.
