Weekend Teaching Series: Bulls Eye Living

Sermon Title: Defining My Life’s Purpose

Sermon in a Sentence: What would be my life’s purpose statement?

Weekend Scale of Difficulty: 5 out of 10

Attendance: 48

Service Length: 60min

Understandable Message: 5 out of 10 In order to get where you’re going, you need to have a plan. To have a goal in life is great, but how are you going to achieve it? If you achieve that goal in life, does that define who you are? In other words if your goal is to become a doctor, and all of your focus, and all of your energy goes into achieving that goal. So much that it defines who you are. What happens if you were to lose your license and not be able to practice medicine any longer? Or maybe you want to be a professional athlete, and blow out your knee never to compete again? Or maybe your identity is found in your spouse. What would happen to you if they left you? By placing our identity in earthly values, we can quickly lose our identity.

If you are a Christian God should be at the center of the Bulls Eye. You should be less goal oriented, and more God oriented. Instead of asking what will people say about me when I am gone, you would ask what will God say about me when I stand before Him? If we are God oriented we will be able to weather the storms associated with the lose of a career, or a relationship. We would not define ourselves by that worldly standard, but a Godly one.

This was a little deep, and a little heady for some of the students. They were given homework to create a life’s purpose statement. Both believers and nonbelievers. I know that less than half of the students will do this. My prayer is that they will all think about where they want to find their identity, and to who’s standard they will chose to live by.
